They're not models in a commercial shoot. They're a married couple, pretending they're not married so a wedding photographer could illustrate an article on shooting engagement sessions.
We'll let the photographer, Mike Colon, explain it.
"I shot their engagement session and their wedding, and then Ceremony magazine asked me to do an article on engagement sessions. I loved this couple so much—they're good looking, they have style, they look great in front of the camera—that I called them and asked if they'd be willing to do another engagement session, to kind of re-stage the engagement session."
Mike offers engagement sessions as part of his wedding package. It's a way of getting the couple to be comfortable with him before the wedding, and, maybe more important, a way for him to get to know what to expect from them. "In engagement sessions, if it's all working well, I direct a couple just to get them into the right light, and I tell them how to position themselves for the camera so that we can get great shots. Then I just set them free to be themselves and do their own thing, and I try to capture it.
"They were just walking across the street. I was shooting with my 70-200 VR [70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor] on the D2x, and I stopped and let them go ahead. I was getting shots of them walking away, holding hands, and she saw the dress in the window. She just yanked him toward the window and pointed at it. She was playing the role—I had nothing to do with the idea. When I took the shot I had the feeling it was going to be a great shot, something I could use for the magazine story and even an ad later on. I ended up using it for a bunch of different ads. It's really effective because it's different from other wedding photographers' photos. It's not a photo of a wedding, yet it says wedding because of the dress, and it relates to the bride, who is the object of my advertising. All brides-to-be can see themselves in this image."
And some brides-to-be may figure out that it's not quite real. "Oh, yeah," Mike says, "in some of the shots I forgot to have her take off her wedding band."
