I know, I know... it's been way too long since I've posted! Let me tell you what I've been up to. I finished catching up on client orders and decided to celebrate by going surfing last Thursday during a pretty significant swell. I went to a secret spot that is supposed to be really good during a big swell. I was in the water shortly after sunrise with my friends Ben and Joel. I caught a few waves and was starting to have fun. Then, just after kicking out after riding this one wave, I was under water and my board came along and cracked me in the head. I ended up with a nice gash that needed some stitches. I was taken care of at a local walk-in clinic and made it out of there just in time for a meeting with a bride at my office. Luckily I have a shower at my office so I could rinse all the blood out of my wetsuit and get cleaned up before the meeting. Now get this... in the middle of my meeting I felt some warm liquid running down my neck and behind my ear. I excused myself to the restroom to find that my head was bleeding all over and I had like 3 streams of blood coming down through my hair. Just like MacGyver I used hairspray and stick of gum to fix the situation and continued with my meeting.
So you're thinking... Mike, that's a pretty rough day. It gets worse... I was in a second meeting with another bride and I get a phone call from my wife at home telling me that my son Aidan just fell down the stairs! He seemed to be ok other than some scratches and bumps, but my wife was pretty much traumatized and I had to cut my meeting short to go home. Thank God he's ok! What a day! So the Colón boys were locked in a Nerf room for a few days and that's why I took so long to post.
I found out from my accountant just a few days ago that I owe waaaay more than I thought in taxes this year. She said I need to either dump a ton of money into my pension plan, buy some equipment, or buy a new SUV. So I bought an SUV (see photo above). I'm a sucker for a good excuse to spend money on things with 4 wheel drive. Especially when snowboarding season is starting up! So, I guess to make this legal, I'm going back to shooting extreme sports in the mountains. I need to ask my accountant if I can write off a new snowboard this year too! I think I might go up to Big White in B.C. to hang with Gary Fong in his ski in/ski out chalets! Hmmm.. can I write that off too? I hope the IRS doesn't read blogs! Well, I'm sure there is a good reason to do some photo reconnaissancee work up in British Columbia on my new snowboard and so it's 100% legitimate right? I think Nikon is making a digital wifi helmet cam for just this type of work! (I should clarify that I'm joking about this stuff so I don't lead anyone astray - I am a firm believer in keeping everything 100% legit in my business, and that includes paying taxes. I know that God's blessing has been on my business because I do my best to honor Him in every decision I make.)
Oh yeah.. I switched the dates on my March workshop to the 20-23 and there are 12 seats left. So if you were wanting to do my workshop and go to WPPI, now there's some room to relax in between!
Happy New Year Everyone!! May God richly bless you, your family, and your business in 2006!
Mike
p.s. I forgot to tell you that my brave wife took my stitches all by herself last night and it didn't even hurt! What a great wife!

Hi Mike.
Sorry to hear about your trouble while surfing. I'm glad both you and your son are doing well.
I was down in Redondo last week after picking up a new Canon 70-200 IS lens and got the shots in the slieshow below.

Gotta love an accountant that tells you that you need to spend $$$ :-)
I guess even with a bad start, all you gotta do is count your blessings. :)
'Nice to know the Colón boys are okay now.
I guess we'll just be waiting for news and updates about those workshops, back here in the Philippines.
God Bless and Happy New Year!
Hi Mike;
Bro you totally kick much ass!!!
I have been following you since I joined Pictage in May of 2005. You totally have me stoked to make 2006 my best ever. Im currently on the fence of going full time and really need to surround myself with positive people. I read what you said about the Tipping Point, you are so right. My Girlfriend and I were talking about the book a fe weeks ago. She is totally in my corner and I am so blessed.
Im hoping to make your March worksop. Im in the Washington D.C. Market and live in Suburban Maryland. I really relate to your style and it is really driving me to push my work in a similar direction.
Look forward to meeting you or just discussing good photography.

P.S.
Let that injury heal before you try that again.
Really glad your son is ok.
As the father of two Awesome Boy's, I must say being a Dad is the best thing...Dont you agree.
Hi Mike.
Sorry to hear about the injury. Would wearing a helmet while surfing work? :) I'm just kidding. I couldn't imagine myself going through the same meeting. That MacGyver thing you did was ingenuous. What a meeting that was eh.
But seriously, I'm glad to hear you and your son are well. =)
You're right, about what you said about honoring the Lord. He truly deserves it. I've decided to lift up my plans of pursuing wedding photography in prayer a few months back, although I've been into it part-time for quite a while now. He hasn't answered yet. :-/
ps: nice car!
Wow! Sorry to hear about your injury and your son's injury as well. You guys really know how to end the year with a bang, I guess!
Hmmm, gum in the hair to fix a gash in the head! That's a new one! Wonder if that is going to be the way to fix this type of wound in the future...
My daughter and I just re-watched Blue Crush the other day too! Waves can be dangerous!
Take care!
Russ
Thanks for the great comments! I loved reading them!
Mike!
My girlfriend another photographer here in town got your DVD and we watched it together a few weeks ago. Wow! Let me just tell you it was so great. I have set more appointments for brides in this past week than any week ever before. I know you are having a workshop in March but I am unable to attend those dates.
I was interested if you would consider an east coast workshop. Maybe in Miami or even the Bahamas? By seeing your post about tax deductions I think sunny 80 degrees this time of year sounds like a great one. Although you might be sad about our waves. You could pick up scuba diving instead?
I really would love to attend one of your workshops and I hope that you will keep them coming!!!
Mike,
You have the raddest Web team in the world. Did www.omatik.com create it? Sick!
Glad that little Aidan is okay!
Karla
ps - "action" not extreme, c'mon surfer bro!!!
Haha! Karla.. nice little plug for the hubby eh? You are too funny! BUT YOU AIN'T LYING GIRL! My web design team is OMATIK and they are pretty darn RAD if I do say so myself. They never stop amazing me with their incredible talent and dedication! Grab your husband by the face and give him a BIG KISS right on his forehead for me! haha! He would love that!
Hey Arden! Congrats on your success! I'm glad you liked the DVD! Regarding the workshop in the Bahamas... that sounds like an excellent plan! Scuba diving is something I've been meaning to take up so here's the deal: You get a group of 10 photographers, pick out a location.. and I'll do the rest to make that happen. Warm waters here we come!
Sounds Like a Tough New Years Introduction Mike..I am glad to hear both you and your son are doing fine.
Ray
So I have started rounding up a group for an eastcoast workshop...I have 4 already just a few more to go.... Not bad eh
