Ok.. so I might just open up the workshop to a few more photographers since people are twisting my arm. I think we should max it at 20 to keep the intimacy and high quality learning experience. Let me know your thoughts. If this happens, keep an eye out tomorrow (Friday) for the release of 5 more seats. It's first come, first serve to be fair to everyone! Those of you who contacted me for the waiting list will be notified via email when it goes live.

Here are a few shots I retouched for Grace Ormonde for her 2006 magazine. I took these in front of the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. It's a funny story... I was up in the hotel suite of Ines DiSanto for her annual market week runway show and I got this brilliant idea! Since Grace was standing there talking to Ines, I walked up and took a chance. I said, "Hey.. why don't we take one or two of these gorgeous models down the street for some shots? The light is perfect and we'll get some great stuff for editorial!" Grace looked at me like I was crazy and Ines just looked puzzled and confused. Grace said "Are you thinking straight? If we do that with Ines, we have to do it with every designer and they're not going to go for that." So I said "Ok, so we make the offer to everyone and if they say no.. it's their loss right?" and this was the closer... "And who cares anyway Grace... you're the boss right?"

So I ran back to my hotel room and grabbed my favorite 5 lb lens (200mm 2.0) that I lugged carry-on with me for just an occasion like this and met the models in front of the hotel for the shoot. I had about 15 minutes with them and it was so much fun. Of course we drew a crowd of spectators on the street and a few wannabe paparazzis showed up, which made it even more fun! So the moral of the story is... It doesn't hurt to ask!

Here's some techy info on the shoot:
Lens: 200mm 2.0 AF-S VR shot wide open
Camera: Nikon D2x set to Aperture Priority
Image quality: RAW uncompressed
Focus mode: Dynamic Continuous
White Balance: Auto
Photoshop Enhancement: Changed to black and white by taking down the saturation in the Photoshop RAW image processor, also used the image processor contrast, vignetting, and curves before opening in Photoshop. Applied some more dodging and burning in Photoshop and minor cropping.

God Bless!
Mike
P.S. Stop and thank God for 10 things good in your life... and then thank Him for something that didn't go wrong that could have!

Amazing story -- I read it like 4 time it was so good. Besides I am a slow reader. :-)

I love that you also told the equipment you used and the post processing you did. Thanks for sharing that!

Seems like an a lot of DOF for 200mm 2.0 shot wide. Incredibly sharp

Mike:

Thanks for sharing and also for the reminder to stop and thank God. It is, after all, His world that we have the privelege of photographing and interpreting. He is the Master Artist.

Your work is amazing and your faith inspiring.

Very Cool Mike!

Glad to see you are now blogging as well. I started blogging for my clients in October and really enjoy it. I've been reading Gary Fong's for a while now, and guys on DWF encouraged me to start my own. I've been shooting weddings for 15 years... going on my 16th next year!

Check mine out when you get a chance at http://www.russlowe.blogspot.com

Take care! Gotta get ready for church!

Excellent shots Mike! I'm a fan. =)

The blog is a great idea. I'm sure more people will come and visit.

Just a few questions on the photographs above. What were the ISO and metering modes you used?

Thanks Daniel! ISO was 250 and I was using matrix (or pattern) metering with aperture priority and zero exposure compensation. Take care!
