This post goes out to all of you wedding photographers and business owners just starting out. I'm not sure why I felt like talking about this tonight but I just want to give some words of encouragement to those of you currently struggling with where you are right now in your photo biz.

My wife and I have been through a lot these past 8 years. We've experienced probably every emotion that exists to mankind. We've cried together, danced with joy together, stressed out together, and have spent many hours on our knees praying for miracles in our business.

I remember one occasion very clearly. It was about 6 years ago when Julie and I were newlyweds. We were having an extremely rough month financially and I remember being totally stressed out because nothing seemed to be working no matter how much we tried. I was racking my brain for marketing ideas and was seriously getting to a place of desperation because we did not have nearly enough money to pay our bills which were due in a matter of days. I just remember pacing around in the bedroom of our small apartment feeling like I was going to lose it completely and have a nervous breakdown.

God must have known that I was at my wits end because all of the sudden I realized something. I was trying to do everything on my own without asking God for help. I remember grabbing Julie and telling her we need to pray. We got on our knees beside our bed (using pillows because I had a feeling we'd be there for a while) and started praying. We didn't pray for help as much as we prayed for forgiveness for forgetting who our provider is. It was like He was saying, "I am your provider, stop trying to play my role. Give me your business and I'll take care of everything. You can rest now."

Now this is the cool part... As we were praying, the phone rang. Now you'd think I wouldn't answer the phone during such an intense prayer session, but I kinda knew that I should answer it and sure enough it was a bride calling to book. This was just the first one. Over the next 48 hours we booked 4 more weddings. It was absolute craziness and I'll never forget how God intervened in our life that weekend.

It seems that every time I try to push forward on my own and forget to trust God, I get nowhere. Looking back now, it has always been those times when I give up and rely on God that stand out as times when our business grew by leaps and bounds.

The moral of this story is to simply give up and trust God. He'll take care of you!

I love this scripture in Matthew 6:19-34

"Don't store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

"Your eye is a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is good, your whole body is filled with light. But when your eye is bad, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!

"No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

"That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn't life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don't plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren't you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?

"And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don't work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?

"So don't worry about these things, saying, `What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?' These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

"So don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today's trouble is enough for today.

Hi Mike!

I have to say that you have always been a great inspiratom to me and i have wanted to have the sort of photographic and marketing skills you have.
This is one of the best posts on your blog ever and I can't tell you the relief i have felt that you have experienced what i am experiencing/about to experience in my career move towards wedding photogrphy - lately it seemed that i am the only one struggling to make ends meet.

since you are posting on your blog more often, wou might want to share more of your earlier experiences so people like me who are in the early stages of our careers can be benefit.

Also, i am going to go out on a limb and ask you two questions, hope you don't mind.
1. what is the best marketing/sales advice you consider especially for someone like me who is starting in this highly competitive business.

2. regarding wedding photography, in terms of taking pictures of the event, what would you advise with regards to improving ones wedding photography skills.

if you want you can have a look at some of my work: www.zakazmi.net

Hoping to hear from you soon.

Mike, these are beautiful words of encourgement! As one of those just starting out professionally at the age of 50, I often times think that there's just not enough time to do this. I have to constantly remind myself that it can be done if thats where the Lord wants me to go! Thanks for posting this up this morning. Blessings to you and your family!

Mike, God continues to pour out of every pore of your body. It is rare and a treasure to find such people in this temporary world. You also sound like your wife is a soft place for you to land, and a woman of amazing integrity. I have not met either of you, but what an inspiration. What Blessings!!!

Thank you for sharing such a powerful story! I totally agree with everything you've shared, and when give up the control and give it to God, He blesses us for it! I've had to learn that the hard way too! I am not a wedding photographer, but I really enjoy reading what you have to share ... very inspirational! Thanks for being willing to share such insight!

It's almost like you were in 'my life' this weekend! We are trying to make the move to fulltime in this business and somedays, it just doesn't seem logical. When and only when we give up that control do things look better. I know that everytime I start trying to figure it out and control it, I fail miserably. When I put God first and seek him, things really do fall into place.

Once again Mike, your honesty and open ness is greatly appreciated. I am really looking forward to meeting you in Cleveland next month.

Have fun at the workshop this week, wish I could have made it!

Amen and God Bless!

Dear Mike,
Thank you. I needed your message today, I needed to be reminded to put everything in God's hands. I am in awe of how many photographers are sharing the word of Christ, that alone has been such a wonderful gift to me. Thank you for helping all of us new photographers out there. You have an amazing gift, thank you for sharing it.

Mike,
Thank you so much for the encouragement! It is just what I needed to hear. I needed to be reminded to trust in God. He IS our provider. I have lived my life off the verse, "All things are beautiful in HIS time." With patience and more patience. I know that He will provide and take care of me and my business. Both you and Julie are so awesome and such a wonderful example that I look up to.
Thank you!!!! ;-)

What an awesome testimony!!! You are such a minister of the gospel, it is so amazing at how God is using you to minister to thousands of people. I am from East Texas(the bible belt) and it is so incredibly cool to see an on fire born again Christian using his fame not for selfish purposes but to futher the kingdom of God!! This message hit home today, I got two sermons today one in church and one on your blog!!

I pray that God will continue to bless your family and business!!

Hi Mike,

Just reading these words shows how truly great and wonderful God is! The amazing work he's done in your life, I hope will also be done in mine. It's funny how I came to this article today because like you from a few years back, i'm now going through the same thing, I've booked 2 events this month and pretty much all of that money is going to bills! now i don't know what I will do for next month. But I know deep down that God is in control and by offering my business up to Him he will take care of everything. You're an inspiration to us all, especially in a world that certainly lacks Godly Men.

How true Mike. Two years ago I decided to leave my former career and go back to what I loved to do. After praying and talking with my wife about it she encouraged me to either open the studio or shut up. When we opened we had no current work to show our potential clients. Since then we have moved to a new and bigger location and now can hardly keep up with our work load. From the get go we have tried to keep our business Christ centered. The hardest part is letting go and letting him take over. Once you do that, look out and hold on!
Thanks for your blog and words of encouragement. It is so awesome to find other people that are not afraid to show their faith AND share it with others.

I needed this SO much! After being youth pastors for the past 9 years, and being chewed up and spit out by our last church we felt we needed a time of rest from ministry and prayed and felt God speaking to us to relocate and open a studio. What seemed impossible has happened and we opened our doors officially last week. I was very excited to see our first client show up yesterday for her viewing session in a brand new sports mercedes and her senior daughter who I had photographed in another luxury car. They loved the images but I was disappointed with their order. I closed up shop and went home with my head hung low and have been pretty down until reading this. I wanted to say thank you for reminding me who my source is! It's not the "high end" clients I in my target market...it's God. And when I rely on Him...He never lets me down, even when things seem impossible! If you remember please say a prayer for us in Oklahoma.

Thanks Mike! I am in that place right now. I just started up my business about a year ago. I was really scared about what was going to happen now that Summer was over with. After realizing there was no way I was going to make it on my own I began praying just as you did. After doing so, I started getting several calls about senior pictures, family pictures for greeting cards, etc. I have also booked 2 wedding for next Summer. I would have never thought I would have two weddings already lined up. It is an amazing feeling. God is great!! Thanks for all the inspiration man.

Hi Mike,

This is my first response to any of your blog entries, & I have to say, first of all, THANK YOU!! I am an AMATURE photographer, with TONS of passion for it, & no clue where to start. I just got done talking to God in my backyard, & was on my way to shutting everything off, & going to bed, when I thought, I need to write Mike Colons...well, let me read his blog first...just another confirmation of what my husband & I have learned to live with...EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON!!!! Not only have I come to admire your work professionally, your obvious admiration for your own family & friends, but now, you have also become a true inspiration!!! In more ways then one!!!

Thanks Mike,

Mike,

What you do and how you share with others really speaks volumes of the understanding that life as a child of God is about giving what we get for the sake of caring, and in the process we are blessed even more.

The next time I go to Cali I gotta check out your church...which one do you go to?

Rock on!

Seriously Mike!
This is where I have been before and am again now... a place of being pulled closer into the father's heart. God is reminding me to look to Him only for my provision, not clever marketing strategies, not earthly fame and glory, not to riches, and especially not to man. I am challenged to view my life in light of eternity and to invest my time and money with that mind.

My girlfriend and I spent a bit of time praying yesterday and I also repented of not trusting and rejoicing in God.

Thanks for the inside look into your history. Such an encouragement. I really appreciate you being of like mind and heart to me. It is great to have someone to look up to, respect and admire in an at times otherwise greedy and selfish industry.

When I grow up... I wanna be like Mike because he is an amazing photographer I know who reminds me a lot of Jesus!

It is SO amazing how God can provide tangible affirmation - if we ask! I'm in the first year of my business and if I don't daily surrender control I can get stressed fast. But as long as I focus on glorifying God and releasing the worry about booking the next wedding, he is faithful to provide. I've seen that again just in the last few days. Thanks, Mike, for sharing how God was/is faithful to you, it is such an encouragement!

wow mike...thanks for that. its like you wrote that for me! i am a newbie in this business and have been blessed to have some really good people who are already successful by my side willing to help me out...but it still seems overwhelming at times. when you dont know what youre doing its hard to know what the next step you should be taking is or how to even figure out in what direction. but remembering to trust Him and His plan is what gives us the peace that it will be better than anything we could work out. so thanks again for your encouragement and for being so faithful...its refreshing to have other believers as role models to look up to :)

Mike, I would like to say that I find your web site and words so very inspiring. I have been a photographer for a very long time and I have not really tired to start a business. I was in the Navy for 12 years as a photographer and I love to earn a living at it. I too have a faith in the Lord and I need to have his love and direction. Worldly things and selfishness have blinded me. I am taking a small leap of faith today, a move that will allow me to start shooting in digital, and reading your insight and faithfulness has given me new hope. I believe that along with reading your web site blog and buying this digital camera will enable me to start what I dream about everyday, shooting weddings. Thank you very much and praise the Lord. Good Day Mike! I know the response to this post has been incredible, And I will likely resound similar words of thanks...but, the most incredible thing is that I've heard this very same message for the last three Sundays and now, here on your site. God is definitely trying to reach me on this and he is working through you. How beautiful! I'm sure it bring tears of joy, welling straight up from your soul. I've been in photography since 1995 and began old-school medium format on Hasselblads and saw my business double & triple annually until just last year and now have seen it drop all the way down to nearly nothing. I'm totally at peace being at the end of my rope and letting go-giving it all to God for his will-but, my talent is truly a gift from God and all who I've touched relay this to me constantly. The mere mention of walking away from this gift comes with great grief from all my friends & followers. So...here I sit, scratching my head, waiting for God to show me a path, aspiring to serve him first. Please say a prayer for me. You are the most amazing model of grace, faith, & praise!

Thank you,

April

Hey Mike, I don't know how I came across this post tonight, but some how I just ended up here. My wife and I are completely in this situation right now and have tried to hard to do this on our own. Every time we move forward some how we are pushed to the ground and have to pick ourselves up, one to many times. I feel we really need to reconnect with God, cause no matter what happens God will be there to help dust us off we shouldn't be doing this alone. I see that. We have been to busy for God. I can't believe we have done that. Thanks for posting this even 2 years later it puts a tear in my eye and I'm off to pray. Thank you again and God Bless.
