Tunnel Vision

My wife must have heard me say it a thousand times. "Babe, there's light at the end of the tunnel.. I can see it." Yes, I have tunnel vision. I focus on a destination and shut everything out until I get there. The problem is, that light seems to keep itself about the same distance away. I can have the most efficient month of my life and yet there it is, just another 100 yards ahead. It's gets bright sometimes and other times it seems to be dim, but it's always off in the distance. When will I be living in that light? Scary thought! So that's it... I'm done with the tunnel. I choose to live right now in the light. I've arrived at my destination because I've decided that my destination is not success in business, it's success in the family God has given me.

I hear you. I know exactlye what you are talking about. Is like chasing the wind. It is a liberating experience when you realize the futility of it,

I am with you, business is important, no doubt, but I want enjoy every chance I get with my wife and kids. I want them to learn about the love of God through me loving them and my wife.

Once thing you will notice very soon is that kids grow so fast!! Enjoy them. I have been blessed with three, and the other day my 5 years old, who is learning to read, sat next to me and began to read while I worked. It sounded gloriuous, I had to stop and nejoy it. I could have missed that moment "becasue of important things", but no, I will not, he is way more important!

Yes, I am with you a 100%. God bless.

The Journey Is The Destination. That is the name of one of my friends blogs. I think that those words hit the nail on the head.

Wow! What a great thought Mike!

You're right on!

Ursula K. Le Guin once said, "It is good to have an end to journey towards, but it is the journey that matters in the end."

Thanks for reminding us of that Mike! :)

So when's do I get to take your money in the next poker tournament??? :)

Your comment, Mike, reminded me of something. The light at the end of the tunnel is a great illustration of the way we look at our own lives. It's like were looking at life through a telephoto lens all the time :). Our vision is so limited and one directional. The end of the tunnel is when we will finally stand in God's presence. Thats when we will truly be able to "see" for the first time! Better bring your shades!

mike,

as i sit here feeling overwhelmed at the thoughts in my mind "What room will we hold the Thirst Auction in at WPPI, Indonesia project mid 07, Tanzania early 08, starting to do some seminar stuff, call that bride, edit this, that etc. and how am I gonna make it with Lara so sick with our third child on the way . . .. " I am inspired by your words. In the end very little matters except how much I've loved in the name of Jesus! Thanks. God bless. I'll pray for you to have the courage and faith to live this out.

So wise Mike....It's so easy isn't it??? to get caught in the spiraling, cycling quest for business success. No matter what level or the hours spent we still strive for the light at the end. Really you have to be in the light first....to see where you're going. As you've realized, family is it! Numero Uno! My husband keeps reminding me of that! The light begins here first and the business will follow! Damn....if I could only remember that! thanks for your insights Mike.

Ecclesiastes 5:18
"Here is what I have seen to be good and fitting: to eat, to drink and enjoy oneself in all one's labor in which he toils under the sun during the few years of his life which God has given him; for this is his reward."

To enjoy God and His gifts while they may be enjoyed rather than to vainly search for the increase without God.

Oh and the tunnel pick rocks too!

Hi Mike its Fabio.Do you know that I had a terrible day today? Of course not but let me tell you somenthing: Rigth know I am in front of my computer and my 4 years old daugthe Bryanna, came to me and ask me to do something. I stoppes what I was doing and did what she asked me to do...five seconds later she came back and asked me to do the same thing again, and again , I got upset e fell bad about it, so I decided to check it out your blog, I couldn't believe what I was reading.
Focus in Jesus, you family and nothing else matters. I called her back, talked to her, kissed her and hugged her, what a amazing feeling.
Thank you
FABIO

Mike, I really appreciate you. Andrew is insightful to quote that Ecc. verse...much of that book also talks of how many of our 'destinations' are futile, like striving after wind....simply always just beyond our grasp.

There's a fairly well known quote that says, "I don't fear failure. I fear being succesfull in things that don't matter." Mike, thanks for always being willing to remind us of what matters....

very true and from the heart mike.

isn't it funny the way life makes us stop sometime to evaluate what should always be so obvious...but yet somehow, it slips away from clarity. our families are the first to help keep things grounded, real and focused on REAL important things.

no day but today!

Mike,
Isn't it interesting when we choose to live in the "light" we discover that there is no ceiling (because there is no tunnel)and our praise and worship (which should be our lives) goes strait to God? We don't feel like our worship is being inhibited. We are free to do what He asks and requires of us. To live justly love mercy and walk humbly with our God.
Blessings,
Jonalee

Thank you Mike! I needed this tonight. Looking at my business, the only aspect that is slows me down is family. The answer makes more sense now. Do nothing.

Hey Mike,

In the last few years I have learned a lot about the journey. I have always been so focused on the destination that many times I didn't enjoy the ride. Now, I know that it's not about what the next level, but what matters most. When we are in our last days no ever says "I wished I had worked more hours."

Thanks for making me reflect a bit.

Blessings,
Robert

There's a song ringing through my head "I want to be in the light, as you are in the light, I want to shine like the stars in the heavens" (I think it's by DC talk???) Anyway, thanks for shining. Hope you have a wonderful day. Kim

When our present is filtered by the past we can’t look forward to the future. The meaning of life is literally ANYTHING that we want it to be. Ah, sweet existentialism :)
