$40 Workshop with Mike, Jessica, & Dane
For the next four weeks, starting tomorrow night, Tuesday 4/8/08 from 7-9pm, I'll be teaching a class with Dane Sanders and Jessica Claire at Rock Harbor University called "Missional Photography :: More Than Pictures". I am so excited about this class because it will be equipping photographers to tell stories using their cameras on the mission field. CLICK HERE for details and to register. The photos below were taken in the Brazilian Amazon while on location with Thirst Relief International. For more details on Dane's blog about this class CLICK HERE.

Registered last week. See you there!
Outstanding! Anyone misses this and it's their loss.

so stoked on this ... can't wait!
You had a blog post back in the day about having one of your intensives rolled into a Thirst Relief run. I thought long and hard but had just started my business and had no cash. Oh well. It's very nice that you, Dane, & Jessica are helping others in this way. Kudos!
Oh, I so want to be a part of this.
I've been working with Bill Austin and Starkey Labs here in Minnesota and they go on mission trips all year round to give the gift of hearing to children. It's wonderful.
Their annual Gala fundraiser is this June 14th here in Minneapolis/St. Paul. It's really amazing work.
I would love to come out and be a part of yours as well.
The love of Christ is like no other. I asked Jesus to come into my life when I was 4. :)
I'm actually signed up for this already and am very much looking forward to it! See you then!

This is so great! I wish I didn't live in the heart of the US, I'd love to go.
That is where I want my photography to make me--the mission field. I would love to bring awareness back to the US about the situations of missionaries/countries all over the world.
I'm sure that this will change the lives of many photographers!
Speaking of Missional Photography. I encourage all photographers to volunteer with their local "Heart Gallery". Most major cities have them. It takes only a few hours per year, but you help children get adopted by taking photos that show off their personality. It also opens your heart to foster care and adoption.

These shots absolutely pierce the soul. After having lost my father to cancer two years ago, I hope to someday document the harshness of the disease in it's latter stages. I didn't understand what a cruel disease it really is until I went through it myself, and even at that time I saw most of it as if through my lens. I would find it a great blessing to have the opportunity to raise awareness and perhaps contribute towards a cure. Having said all that, I wish I was in California to participate in this seminar! Any chance you will be taping it?
Blessings,
Gina Leigh
you're SO awesome. seriously.
i ran into dane at church on sunday and he invited to come out one night and watch you all in action! can't wait! :)
Hey Mike. What a great idea for a class and a terrific way to encourage photographers to give back! If I was in Cali I'd sign up in a minute...but Boston's a little to far of a commute. ;) Good luck with the class!
Brazil is amazing! Unfortunately, the relatives of the indigenous peoples face severe threats. Not only is the rain forest being clearcut at a staggering rate, runoff from cattle and contaminated water add to this global epidemic. Thank you for sharing these images. This is one of the few times I wish I were in Cally to attend the workshops :)
Peace,

I totally blogged you dude. ;-) Great start to a great class!
Mike, thank you so much for joining Dane and giving your time for this... It truly is a gesture to do this. And, your thirst relief photos here are amazing. I hope you'll get the chance to show them to the class! Like you said, your style is so opposite Dane and Jessica's crazy colors, and personally I really admire the skill it takes for you to make these smooth, muted images work. It's not easy!

Sounds like it's going to be a great class!
I have friends that are doing this quietly for non-profits with their photography. See them at ThrowingLight.com. Their four values are: autonomy (taking care to photograph people who have given verbal consent), generosity (photos taken with the intent of benefitting their community in some way), honesty (fairly representing the real situation) and dignity (being careful & compassionate stewards of the images). Important things to remember when entering another's culture. Here's to caring for our world, Pamela
That sounds like an awe-inspiring workshop!! You have some great work and what a great way to give a little back. Thanks for sharing :)
Mike a little belated as I was travelling but I cannot think of anyone better qualified to instill a passion into these photographers on such a great cause.
If only a part of your Wedding passion is transmitted then these photographers are in for a treat.
Great stuff. T the Brit
Man, I so wish I could join ya'll for this class. I worked for a missions organization for 2 years and God closed the door (I believe to pursue photography).
My ultimate dream is to live overseas and empower others and give them a voice by teaching them photography.
Your heart is amazing! Thanks for sharing your passion and talents with others. God Bless!
